Mobile Phone imports raised up to $630 million in FY 2015

(Karachi, July 26, 2015)-Import of Smart Phones in Pakistan reached up to $630 million worth in fiscal year (FY) 2015, 11.6% more as compared to $564 million of FY 2014, The country had imported $511 million worth of mobile phones in FY2013, which increased by 10.4% to $564 million in FY2014, according to statistics released by the State Bank of Pakistan.
Report further added that the overall telecom imports recorded 0.7% increase in the fiscal year 2015. Which were clocked in at $1.22 billion in FY 2014 compared to $1.21 billion for the year 2013.
This rise in import of internet phones seems due to demand for portable broadband after launching third-generation (3G) network and long-term evolution (LTE) or 4G services by mobile operators last year. Hopefully this will continue to drive mobile phone imports to Pakistan in near future, Experts says.

Overall 15% or 20 million to 115.4 million decline has been recorded of telecom users at the end of FY 2015 as compared to 135.8 million of December 2014, after recently concluded biometric verification. Hopefully it is to pick up again due to aggressive and charming marketing by cellular operators to sell their 3G and 4G connections. There are now 12.8 million 3G users and 140,000 users subscribed to 4G technology in the country.
It is imperative to mention that Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, in his budget speech proposed a 100% increase in GST on various categories of imported mobile phones. As per said proposal, the GST on mobile handsets has increased from their current level of Rs.150 to Rs.1000 respectively.
