Free WIFI Service Announced for Major Cities of Punjab

Chairman Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB), Umar Saif announced via his social media account, that major cities of Punjab i.e. Lahore, Rawalpindi and Multan will getting free Public WIFI Access in main public places. At first footstep, Lahore will be the first one to get this service. Afterwards, Rawalpindi & Multan will get this service in the months to come. Further, more cities will be added to the list.

As per updates on the internet, arrangements for the launch of free WIFI service in Lahore have been completed. This service will be available in a total 115 public places throughout the city. These public places includes 17 shopping places, 12 public parks, Metro bus stations and 20 educational institutions, railway stations and airport. The parks which will get service includes Gulshan e Iqbal Park, Bagh e Jannah, Model Town Park and Hazoori Park.

It is said that purpose of this project is to promote education in the province and help the public to stay connected to the global digital world. Furthermore, this project was announced in February 2015 and telecomworkers.com covered the story as following

due to some unknown reason it is not yet completed, and now 2 days ago it is declared on social media again. It is important to mention here that Chief Minister of the Punjab has already approved the project.

As well as future of this project is concerned, load shedding / electricity issues are drastic in big cities. Besides this, ethical and adoptive complications also seen throughout the country. It is too early to say that how effective this project will be to promote the education and what will be the public’s reaction to the service.
